Anomalous Northward Energy Transport due to Anthropogenic Aerosols During the 20th Century

چکیده

Abstract In the tropics, absorbed solar radiation is larger than outgoing longwave radiation, while opposite true at high latitudes. This basic fact implies a poleward energy transport (PET) in both hemispheres, which accomplished by atmosphere and oceans. The magnitude of PET determined top gradient net flux, small changes to this quantity must change total absence heat uptake. We analyze large ensemble 50 historic climate simulations from CESM LENS2 project find significant anomaly latter half twentieth century. temporal evolution - with rapid increase after 1950, peak near 1975, decrease 1990s mirrors trend sulphur dioxide (SO 2 , aerosol predecessor) emissions Europe North America. also appears an analysis calculated ERA5 reanalyses CESM2 Single Forcing Large Ensemble. Consistent previous studies, we that SO America brightened clouds reflected additional back space midlatitudes: shortwave increased meridional TOA induced anomalous northward transport. Finally, our results suggest cryosphere processes become important factor setting during first years twenty-first century contributing difference between hemispheres alongside cloud radiative effects.

Contrasts in the effects on climate of anthropogenic sulfate aerosols between the 20th and the 21st century

[1] In this study, we examine the time evolution of the relative contribution of sulfate aerosols and greenhouse gases to anthropogenic climate change. We use the new IPSL-CM4 coupled climate model for which the first indirect effect of sulfate aerosols has been calibrated using POLDER satellite data. For the recent historical period the sulfate aerosols play a key role on the temperature incre...

Enhanced Shortwave Cloud Radiative Forcing Due to Anthropogenic Aerosols

It has been suggested, originally by Twomey (SCEP, 1970), that anthropogenic aerosols in the troposphere can influence the microphysical properties of clouds and in turn their reflectivity (albedo), thereby exerting a radiative influence on climate. This chapter presents the theoretical basis for of this so-called indirect forcing and reviews pertinent observational evidence and climate model c...

Demand for the South’s cotton declined due to new competition...
